One group wrote in asking for more information on early marraige customs. As I come across interesting ones, I'll pass them on to you. Here's an Anglo-Saxon one that is just overflowing with romantic sentiment:

To show the transfer of authority over the woman, the father handed the groom one of the bride's shoes. To show his acceptance of the authority, the groom hit the bride with it.
