Norse Marriage Customs
Women over 15 years of age were generally free to choose their own marriage partner, although the matches were arranged by the father. They could also keep their lands after marriage unlike many European cultures. While we don't know the exact 'ceremony' we do know that the marriage was accompanied by great feasting and exchanging of gifts. Gifts were also given to those invited to attend, and the brides father provided her with a dowry. Women did not take their husband's name but continue to be known as the daughter of their father.
