- On 16 July 1228, Pope Gregory IX came in person to Assisi to canonize Francis, officially declaring him a saint. The solemn ceremony was attended by the friars, a significant group of princes and barons, and a great crowd of ordinary people. Although this fresco has deteriorated, Giotto's skill in portraying realistic human features is still very evident.
