Demo at Chapel Grove Elementary School April 19th, 2002 Gastonia, NC |
|
Children were knighted by Ld. Jonathan Blackbow, by authority of Her Magesty Queen Moody (Ms. Moody, the teacher who arranged the demo). Later the children circulated stations where musical instruments, books, photos, fiber arts and board games were displayed. All the children had a hands-on opportunity with everything except the fighing. Lord Jonathan and Lord Rodger demonstrated fencing. Lady Seraphina stood as marshall to protect the children from the (virtual) spraying blood and body parts. She also displayed and talked about chain maille as well as assisting Lady Alice with the spinning demonstrations. Lady Alice brought and demonstrated a spinning wheel as well as drop spindles, and there were many styles of weaving and yarn on display. Lord Jonathan talked about various types of armor and heraldry, and Lady Seraphina taught Mancala and Nine Men's Morris to eager children who walked away with small bags of beans (game pieces) and a page with a Morris board printed on it. I displayed and demonstrated musical instruments including a bodhran, soprano recorder and a tin whistle. Naturally all the children got a chance to try each instrument on their own. After the demos we were invited to the media center in the school to enjoy a feast, buffet style, with lovely set tables and goblets of new wine (grape juice). The feast included fruits of the new world (honeydew and cantelope), mixed nuts, cheese, bread, raw vegetables, muffins, fried chicken and potato wedges. Merlin then demonstrated some of his magic for the children. Much fun was had by all! ---Ceara |
