Toward a More Period Encampment...
Making a Pavilion: Figuring canvas measurements
by Ceara ni Neill

"French Bell Wedge"
General rule: allow 1 inch for seam allowance for all pieces.

These measurements are based on a tent that is 12 feet tall with a footprint of 12' x 28'... that is, 12' x 12' with 8' radius ends.

Step 1...Figure length and number of flat-side panels.
for length:

Using the Pythagoras Theorem:

A² + B² = C² or 144 + 64 = 208
√208 = 14.42

Because this is a measurement for one panel for one flat side, then
14.42 x 2 = 28.84
Allow 1 inch on each end for seam allowance, So each panel will be 29 feet long or 9 yards, 2 feet. This will span from the ground over the ridge pole and back to the ground on the other side.
for number of panels:

If fabric width is 35", then figure 33”. (seam allowance)
Width of flat section is 12 feet (see shaded section of diagram) or 144 inches.
144 ÷ 33 = 4.36

So you will need 4 panels plus 1 foot for the flat side of the tent.

Step 2...Figure half of the circumference and divide that by the width of your canvas.
For example:
c=π2r ; c = 3.14 (16) = 50.26 feet or 603 inches.
Half this amount = 25.13 feet or 301.59 inches.
If fabric width is 35", then figure 33”. (seam allowance)
301.59 ÷ 33= 9.14

So you will need 9 panels plus 2 inches for each end of the tent.

Using the Pythagoras Theorem,
A² + B² = C² or 144 + 64 = 208
√208 = 14.42

Allow 1 inch on each end for seam allowance, So each panel will be 14 feet 7 inches long or 4 yards,2 feet 7 inches.

Step 3...Rain/Shade Fly.
Same as 1 flat side of measurements (see shaded diagram from Step 1). Allow 1 inch on each end for seam allowance, So each panel will be 14 feet 7 inches long or 4 yards,2 feet 7 inches. 4 panels will center the fly 6 inches from each peak at the top of the tent.

Step 4...Add up measurements.
For flat sides, round to 5 panels at 29 feet = 145 feet or 48 1/3 yards.
For conical ends, round to 18 panels at 14 feet 7 inches = 262 feet 6 inches or 87 ½ yards.
For shade fly, 4 panels at 14 feet 7 inches = 58 feet 2 inches or 19 ½ yards
Grand total: 465 feet 8 inches or 155 ¼ yards
